@inproceedings{fdi:010021789, title = {{F}at content and essential fatty acid ({EFA}) composition of {C}ongolese mature breast milk are influenced by mothers' nutritional status : poster}, author = {{R}ocquelin, {G}{\'e}rard and {T}apsoba, {S}. and {D}op, {M}arie-{C}laude and {M}bemba, {F}. and {T}raissac, {P}ierre and {M}artin-{P}r{\'e}vel, {Y}ves}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}reast milk samples of {C}ongolese women (n = 102) nursing 5 mo-old infants and living in {T}alanga{\¨ie}, a suburban district of {B}razzaville, were collected and analyzed for their fat content and fatty acid ({FA}) composition. {M}others were questioned on their dietary habits. {C}ompared with breast milk from various developed or developing countries ; {C}ongolese mature breast milk was low in fat (28.70 plus or minus 11.33 g/{L}) but rich in 8:0-14:0 {FA}s (25.97 plus or minus 8.17% of total {FA}s) and in polyunsaturated {FA}s ({PUFA}s), particularly in n-3 {PUFA}s (2.39 plus or minus 0.68% of total {FA}s, mainly 18:3 and 22:6). {N}o 18:1 trans was detected. {T}his was associated with the frequent consumption by the mothers of high-carbohydrate foods (processed cassava roots, wheat bread, doughnuts) known to enhance 8:0-14:0 {FA} biosynthesis, and with that of foods providing n-6 and n-3 {EFA}s such as freshwater and saltwater fish, vegetable oils, green leafy vegetables, and high-fat fruit (peanuts, avocado, safou). {T}hese foods were traditionally and locally produced. {M}ilk fat content was negatively related with mothers' {BMI} (body mass index) and varied with the frequency of consumption of certain foods corresponding to distinct dietary patterns.
