@article{fdi:010020714, title = {{A} first interspecific {O}ryza sativa x {O}ryza glaberrima microsatellite-based genetic linkage map}, author = {{L}orieux, {M}athias and {N}djiondjop, {M}arie-{N}o{\¨e}lle and {G}hesqui{\`e}re, {A}lain}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {#{O}ryza glaberrima$ is an endemic {A}frican cultivated rice species. {T}o provide a tool for evaluation and utilisation of the potential of #{O}. glaberrima$ in rice breeding, we developed an interspecific #{O}. glaberrima$x#{O}ryza sativa$ genetic linkage map. {I}t was based on {PCR} markers, essentially microsatellites and {STS}s. {S}egregation of markers was examined in a backcross (#{O}. sativa$/#{O}. glaberrima$//#{O}. sativa$) population. {S}everal traits were measured on the {BC}1 plants, and major genes and {QTS}s were mapped for these traits. {S}everal of these genes correspond well to previously identified loci. {T}he overall map length was comparable to those observed in #indica$x#japonica$ crosses, indicating that recombination between the two species occurs without limitation. {H}owever, three chromosomes show discrepancies with the #indica$x#$japonica$ maps. {T}he colinearity with intraspecific maps was very good, confirming previous cytological observations. {A} strong segregation-distortion hot spot was observed on chromosome 6 near the waxy gene, indicating the presence of s10, a sporo-gametophytic sterility gene previously indentified by {S}ano (1990). {T}he main interests of such a {PCR}-based map for {A}frican rice breeding are discussed, including gene and {QTL} localisation, marker-assisted selection, and the development of interspecific introgression lines.
