@book{fdi:010020032, title = {{T}he freshwater crabs of {W}est {A}frica : family {P}otamonautidae}, author = {{C}umberlidge, {N}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he area of {W}est {A}frica covered by this book includes eighteen countries : {M}auritania, {S}enegal, {T}he {G}ambia, {G}uinea {B}issau, {G}uinea, {S}ierra {L}eone, {L}iberia, {C}{\^o}te d'{I}voire, {M}ali, {B}urkina {F}aso, {G}hana, {T}ogo, {B}enin, {N}iger, {N}igeria, {C}had, {C}ameroon and {E}quatorial {G}uinea ({B}ioko). {C}had, {C}ameroon and part of {E}quatorial {G}uinea ({B}ioko) are usually treated as part of {C}entral {A}frica rather than {W}est {A}frica but these countries have been included because their freshwater crab faunas are principally {W}est {A}frican in character (although endemic taxa and other species of {C}entral {A}frican origin may also be represented in these countries). {T}he {W}est {A}frican faunal region is an informal subdivision of the {A}frotropical ({E}thiopian) zoogeographical region, and lies to the south of the {E}uropean and {M}iddle {E}astern components of the {P}alaearctic zoogeographical region, where freshwater crabs of the genus #{P}otomon$ (family #{P}otamidae$, {O}rtmann, 1896) are found. {T}he {W}est {A}frican freshwater crab fauna includes at least thrity-two species in seven genera and one family. {T}his fauna is arguably the most diverse in {A}frica and has a distinct character which differs greatly from that found elsewhere on the continent. {T}he present work brings together recent contributions to the taxonomy, distribution, and ecology of the entire {W}est {A}frican freshwater crab fauna ({B}ott, 1955, 1959, 1964, 1969a, 1970a ; {M}onod, 1977, 1980 ; {C}umberlidge, 1985a, 1987, 1991a, 1993a,b,c, 1994a,b, 1995a,b,c,d, 1996a,b, 1999 ; {C}umberlidge and {C}lark, 1992 ; {C}umberlidge and {S}achs, 1989a, 1991) and presents new information on phylogeny and biogeography. {T}he past ten years or so have seen the establishment of two new genera (#{P}otamonemus$ {C}umberlide and {C}lark, 1992 and #{L}ouisea$ {C}umberlidge, 1994) and the description of a number of new species from {W}est {A}frica...
