@article{fdi:010019358, title = {{C}haracterization of a new xylanolytic bacterium, {C}lostridium xylanovorans sp. nov.}, author = {{M}echichi, {T}. and {L}abat, {M}arc and {G}arcia, {J}ean-{L}ouis and {T}homas, {P}. and {P}atel, {B}.{K}.{C}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A} new xylanolytic bacterium designated strain {HESP}1{T} ({T} = type strain) was isolated from a methanogenic digester. {S}train {HESP}1{T} was a motile, rod-shaped, spore-forming bacterium, which possessed a {G}ram-positive type cell wall. {G}lucose, fructose, lactose, trehalose, maltose, raffinose, sucrose, xylan, mannitol, cellobiose, galactose, mannose, melibiose, ribose were fermented to produce, acetate, butyrate, {H}2, {CO}2, formate, isobutyrate, and ethanol. {F}umarate was fermented to acetate. {G}lycerol and methanol were also utilized. {S}ulfate, thiosulfate, nitrate, sulfur and fumarate were not used as electron acceptors. {S}train {HESP}1{T} had a {G}+{C} content of 40 mol% and grew optimally at 37°{C} and p{H} 7 on a fructose containing medium. {P}hylogenetically, strain {HESP}1{T} was most related to {C}lostridium aminovalericum (similarity of 94%) than to {C}. populeti, {C}. herbivorans and {E}ubacterium xylanophilum (average similarity of 92%), all members of subcluster {XIV}a of the low {G}+{C} containing {G}ram-positive branch. {H}owever, strain {HESP}1{T} shared little phenotypic and genotypic traits with {C}. aminovalericum and on the basis of this and phylogenetic evidence, we propose to tentatively designate strain {HESP}1{T} as a new species of the genus {C}lostridium, {C}lostridium xylanovorans sp. nov. {T}he type strain is {HESP}1{T} (= {DSM} 12503).}, keywords = {{BACTERIE} {MESOPHILE} ; {ESPECE} {NOUVELLE} ; {FERMENTATION} ; {XYLANE} ; {ANAEROBIOSE} ; {MORPHOLOGIE} ; {PHYLOGENIE} ; {TAXONOMIE} ; {BIOLOGIE} {MOLECULAIRE} ; {TUNISIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{S}ystematic and {A}pplied {M}icrobiology}, volume = {22}, numero = {}, pages = {366--371}, ISSN = {0020-7713}, year = {1999}, DOI = {10.1016/{S}0723-2020(99)80044-7}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010019358}, }
