@article{fdi:010018376, title = {{G}eochemistry vs. seismo-tectonics along the volcanic {N}ew {H}ebrides {C}entral {C}hain ({S}outhwest {P}acific)}, author = {{M}onzier, {M}ichel and {R}obin, {C}laude and {E}issen, {J}ean-{P}hilippe and {C}otten, {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{C}ompositional variations (major- and trace-element) of {P}leistocene to {P}resent rocks along the volcanic {N}ew {H}ebrides {C}entral {C}hain ({S}outhwest {P}acific) are presented and discussed, using a new set of analyses. {W}e focus in particular on the anomalous {M}g-, {K}-, {LILE}- and {LREE}-rich and {A}l and {S}i-poor character of the basalts from {A}oba and {S}anta {M}aria volcanoes (and, to a lesser extent, from {A}mbrym volcano), all located in the area where the {D}'{E}ntrecasteaux {Z}one collides with the arc. {I}n addition, we note a compositional transition from 'normal' arc basalts to boninite-related high-{M}g andesites at the southern termination of the {NHCC}. {T}he peculiar composition of the rocks of the volcanoes facing the {D}'{E}ntrecasteaux {Z}one has traditionally been related, more or less directly, to the collision-subduction occurring in this area. {W}e present an alternative hypothesis, of a strong geochmeical anomaly under {S}anta {M}aria and {A}oba volcanoes, unrelated to this collision. {I}n this model, a westward and upward invasion of {DUPAL}-type enriched mantle, corroborated by the pattern of intermediate seismicity, occurs under this part of the arc, in strong contrast to the usual {P}acific-type {MORB} mantle source present under all other volcanoes of the {NHCC}. {S}uch a {DUPAL}-type source may explain the anomalous geochemistry of the resulting volcanic products.
