Jost C. auteur aut IRD text bookSection fre text/pdf reformatted digital access The launching of a new INCO Project for mining nickel-bearing laterites in the South of New Caledonia has just been announced. This paper presents the second part of the study of the environmental impact of the Project, and the way it is perceived by the two population groups using the zone : the resident Kanak population and the ecotourists and holiday-makers. The location of the project appears to be of low social value. Its negative impact should be reduced by proposed mitigation, while the expected positive impact is linked to employment. Yet the cultural and habitual way of life and the identity of the residents will have to be respected.
