  abstract = {{T}he launching of a new {INCO} {P}roject for mining nickel-bearing laterites in the {S}outh of {N}ew {C}aledonia has just been announced. {T}his paper presents the second part of the study of the environmental impact of the {P}roject, and the way it is perceived by the two population groups using the zone : the resident {K}anak population and the ecotourists and holiday-makers. {T}he location of the project appears to be of low social value. {I}ts negative impact should be reduced by proposed mitigation, while the expected positive impact is linked to employment. {Y}et the cultural and habitual way of life and the identity of the residents will have to be respected.
