  abstract = {{A}fter an outbreak of {R}ift {V}alley fever in {S}outhern {M}auritania in 1987, entomologic studies were conducted in a bordering region in {S}enegal from 1991 to 1996 to identify the sylvatic vectors of {R}ift {V}alley fever virus. {T}he virus was isolated from the floodwater mosquitoes #{A}edes vexans$ and #{A}e. ochraceus$. {I}n 1974 and 1983, the virus had been isolated from #{A}e. dalzieli$. {A}lthough these vectors differ from the main vectors in {E}ast and {S}outh {A}frica, they use the same type of breeding sites and also feed on cattle and sheep. {A}lthough enzootic vectors have now been identified in {W}est {A}frica, the factors causing outbreaks remain unclear.
