@article{fdi:010012729, title = {{D}istribution of organophosphate and carbamate resistance in {C}ulex pipiens quinquefasciatus ({D}iptera : {C}ulicidae) in {W}est {A}frica}, author = {{C}handre, {F}abrice and {D}arriet, {F}r{\'e}d{\'e}ric and {D}oannio, {J}.{M}.{C}. and {R}ivi{\`e}re, {F}ran{\c{c}}ois and {P}asteur, {N}. and {G}uillet, {P}ierre}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he distribution of organophosphate and carbamate resistance was investigated in 33 samples of #{C}ulex pipiens quinquefasciatus$ {S}ay from 25 cities in {C}{\^o}te d'{I}voire and {B}urkina {F}aso. {O}rganophosphate resistance levels were higher in {C}{\^o}te d'{I}voire than in {B}urkina {F}aso. {C}hlorpyrifos resistance ratios at {LC}95 ranged from 4 to 30 times in {C}{\^o}te d'{I}voire and from 3 to 6 times in {B}urkina {F}aso. {F}or temephos, ratios ranged from 3 to 18 and from 1 to 2, respectively. {O}f 27 samples from {C}{\^o}te d'{I}voire, 25 also displayed cross resistance to carbamates as shown by a mortality plateau in bioassays with propoxur and carbosulfan (similar to chlorpyrifos). {C}ross resistance to organophosphates and carbamates was caused by an insensitive acetylcholinesterase allele ({A}ce {R}). {T}his gene was absent from {B}urkina {F}aso, except in {N}iangoloko near the {C}{\^o}te d'{I}voire border. {O}rganophosphate resistance also was associated with the presence of {A}2-{B}2 overproduced esterases which had higher frequencies in {C}{\^o}te d'{I}voire (75 - 100%) than in {B}urkina {F}aso (40 - 50%). {T}he other esterase with the same electrophoretic mobility as {C}2 from {P}uerto {R}ico and {B}1 from {C}alifornia were identified for the 1st time in {W}est {A}frica. "{C}2" was widespread, whereas "{B}1" was present in only a few mosquitoes from {C}{\^o}te d'{I}voire. {T}hese differences in resistance patterns should be taken into consideration in planning urban mosquito control strategies within 2 countries.
