@article{fdi:010012138, title = {{A} revision of the archaeological sequence of southern {N}ew {C}aledonia}, author = {{G}alipaud, {J}ean-{C}hristophe}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}his paper discusses the archaeological evidence previously available from the region of {N}a{\¨ie}a, {O}ngw{\'e} and {S}aint-{V}incent {B}ays on the south-western coast of {N}ew {C}aledonia and presents new data from the same region. {R}ich pottery deposits attest 3,000 years of continuous occupation characterised by remains from the {K}on{\'e}, {N}a{\¨ie}a 2 traditions. {T}he earliest occupation during the {K}on{\'e} period was organised in small hamlets, which may have been grouped in larger settlements. {T}hese early sites seem to have disturbed by eustatic and coastal adjustments. {T}he {N}a{\¨ie}a period saw the development of large communities of potters whose main product was large pots with handles, a type of vessel not known elsewhere in early {P}acific communities.
