@article{fdi:010009462, title = {{A}ctive oceanic spreading in the northern north {F}iji basin : results of the {NOFI} cruise of {R}/{V} l'{A}talante ({N}ewstarmer project)}, author = {{L}agabrielle, {Y}. and {R}uellan, {E}. and {T}anahashi, {M}. and {B}ourgois, {J}. and {B}uffet, {G}. and {A}lteriis, {G}. de and {D}yment, {J}. and {G}oslin, {J}. and {G}racia-{M}ont, {E}. and {I}wabushi, {Y}. and {J}arvis, {P}. and {J}oshima, {M}. and {K}arpoff, {A}.{M}. and {M}atsumoto, {T}. and {O}ndr{\'e}as, {H}. and {P}elletier, {B}ernard and {S}ardou, {O}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {S}outh {P}andora and the {T}ripartite {R}idges are active spreading centers located in the northern part of the {N}orth {F}iji {B}asin. {T}hese spreading centers were surveyed over a distance of 750 km during the {NOFI} cruise of {R}/{V} {L}'{A}talante ({A}ugust-{S}eptember 1994) which was conducted in the frame of the french-japanese {N}ewstarmer cooperation project. {SIMRAD} {EM}12-dual full coverage swath bathymetric and imagery data as well as airgun 6-channel seismic, magnetics and gravity profiles were recorded along an off-axis from 170°40'{E} to 178°{E}. {D}redging and piston coring were also performed along and off-axis. {T}he axial domain of the {S}outh {P}andora {R}idge is divided into 5 first-order segments characterized by contrasted morphologies. {T}he average width of the active domain is 20 km and corresponds either to bathymetric highs or to deep elongated grabens. {T}he bathymetric highs are volcanic constructions, locally faulted and rifted, which can obstruct totally the axial valley. {T}he grabens show the typical morphology of slow spreading axes, with two steep walls flanking a deep axial valley. {E}longated lateral ridges may be present on both sides of the grabens. {N}umerous volcanoes, up to several kilometers in diameter, occur on both flanks of the {S}outh {P}andora {R}idge. {T}he {T}ripartite {R}idge consists of three main segments showing a sigmoid shape. {M}ajor changes in the direction of the active zones are observed at the segment discontinuities. {T}hese discontinuities show various geometrical patterns which suggest complex transform relay zones. {P}reliminary analysis of seismic reflection profiles suggest that the {T}ripartite {R}idge is a very young feature which propagates into an older oceanic domain characterized by a significant sedimentary cover. {B}y contrast, a very thin to absent sedimentary cover is observed about 100 km on both flanks of the {S}outh {P}andora {R}idge active axis. {T}he magnetic anomaly profiles give evidence of long and continuous lineations, parallel to the {S}outh {P}andora {R}idge spreading axis.
