<dc:description>The assemblages of small fishes occupying the shore habitats of main river channels within the Central Delta of the Niger in Mali were studied on two floodplain rivers (Bani and Niger) throughout more than a whole annual cycle. Twenty-seven species were found, consisting primarily (d = 97%) of small-sized (maximum attainable SL lesser or equal to 10 cm) and mostly sedentary fish species, spawning in the river or being indifferent with respect to spawning site. Rhabdalestes septentrionalis was the most interesting species found in faunal terms. Characids Brycinus leuciscus and B. nurse dominated in the considerably less frequent group of economically important fish. The all-season-round mean estimates of abundance were 160,3 inds/m2 for the River Bani and 118,7 ind./m2 for the R. Niger, corresponding biomasses were 52,1 g/m2 for R. Bani and 49,3 g/m2 for the R. Niger. The analyse of size frequency distribution patterns also provided an indirect information concerning the duration and timing of reproduction period, as well as concerning the appearance and strength of juvenile recruitment.
