  abstract = {{T}he linear response of the {T}ropical {A}tlantic ocean to climatological winds iscalculated in a continuously stratified model and compared with observations. {A}ll the characteristic features of the dynamic topography are reproduced at the proper locations including the series of zonally oriented ridges and thoughs, the {E}quatorial "pivot" zone and the seasonal variations of slope along the equator. {L}inear theory fails to explains seasonal variations of the {S}outh {E}quatorial current and of the {E}quatorial {U}ndercurrent, but it compares favorably for the major zonal currents off the equator ({T}he {N}orth {E}quatorial {C}ountercurrent, the {G}uinea current and undercurrent).
