@article{fdi:010005870, title = {{I}solation and characterization of {S}porobacter termitidis gen. nov., sp. nov. from the digestive tract of the wood-feeding termite {N}asutitermes lujae}, author = {{G}rech-{M}ora, {I}. and {F}ardeau, {M}arie-{L}aure and {P}atel and {B}.{K}.{C}. and {O}llivier, {B}ernard and {R}imbault, {A}. and {P}rensier, {G}. and {G}arcia, {J}ean-{L}ouis and {G}arnier-{S}illam, {E}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A} new chemoorganotrophic bacterium, strain {SYR}, was isolated from the digestive tract of the wood-feeding termite #{N}asutitermes lujae$. {T}his organism was a slightly curved spore-forming rod-shaped bacterium. {I}t had a gram-positive-type cell wall and was obligately anaerobic. {I}t grew exclusively on a limited range of methylated aromatic compounds including 3,4,5-trimethoxycinnamate ({TMC}), sinapate (3,5-dimethoxy-4-hydroxycinnamate), 3,4-dimethoxycinnamate, 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoate, ferulate, syringate (3,5-dimethoxy-4-hydroxybenzoate), and vanillate (4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzoate) but not on carbohydrates, alcohols, or fatty acids. {T}he isolate required yeast extract for growth. {S}train {SYR} grew optimally between 32 and 35°{C} and at p{H} values between 6.7 and 7.2, with {N}a{C}l concentrations from 0 to 5 g/liter, on {TMC} with a doubling time of about 25 h. {D}uring growth on {TMC} in the presence of sulfide or cysteine, dimethyl sulfide and acetate were produced, whereas methanethiol was an intermediary product of metabolism. {T}he ring of the methoxylated aromatic compound was cleaved. {T}he {DNA} base composition was 57 mol% guanine plus cytosine. {C}omparative 16{S} r{RNA} sequence analysis indicated that strain {SYR} was distantly related to #{E}ubacterium desmolans$ and #{E}ubacterium plautii$. {O}n the basis of its distinct phylogenetic position and physiological properties, strain {SYR} has been designated a new species of a new genus, #{S}porobacter termitidis$ gen. nov., sp. nov. (= {DSM} 10068).
