  abstract = {{T}he native region of #{C}asuarinaceae$ family (actinorhizal plants) is {O}ceania ({A}ustralia and {I}ndo-{P}acific islands). {I}n {N}ew {C}aledonia, in spite of the reduced area, a great number of endemic #{C}asuarinaceae$ are present. {I}n fact, 8 species of #{G}ymnostoma$ out of the 18 which make up this genus and 1 species of #{C}asuarina$ are originated from {N}ew {C}aledonia. {T}he two genera, except 1 species, occur in soils derivated from ultramafic rock and are adapted to poor and toxic soils. {F}urthermore, actinorhizal plants can establish nitrogen-fixing symbioses with the slow growing actinomycete #{F}rankia$. {B}ecause of their ecological characteristics, actinorhizal plants frequently occur as pioneer vegetation and are used in the rehabilitation of degraded sites. {T}his work was a first study of the ecology of the symbiosis #{C}asuarinaceae$-#{F}rankia$ in {N}ew {C}aledonia. {I}t was focused on two major topics. {T}he first part will be concerned with the symbiosis, particularly with cross-inoculation trials using crushed nodule suspension as inoculum. {T}he biodiversity of the microsymbiot #{F}rankia$, in relation to plants species and soil, will be analysed in the second part. {T}he results obtained show that this symbiosis is characterized by a great biodiversity. {I}nside the #{G}ymnostoma$ group, no host specificity was observed. {T}hese results were obtained by cross-inoculation tests and molecular characterization of #{F}rankia$. {F}urthermore, no correlation was shown between site or soil and the diversity of #{F}rankia$ strains.
