@incollection{fdi:010005515, title = {{D}'un rem{\`e}de ancestral {\`a} un m{\'e}dicament moderne : sur la piste et les fausses pistes du {R}auwolfia}, author = {{P}rinz, {A}.}, editor = {}, language = {{FRE}}, abstract = {{T}he #{R}auwolfia$ is a striking example how long a traditionally used drug and its importance for modern therapy was not recognized. {A}s early as 1563 the {P}ortuguese physician {G}arcia da {O}rta reported about the use of a snake-like root as a remedy against snake bites in the traditional medicine of {C}eylon. {T}his "snakewood" was introduced in {E}uropean medicine only a few years later. {D}rugs from the newly discovered continents, like {I}pecacuanha or {C}hinchonabark were accepted very quickly by the {E}uropean doctors. {T}hey had welcomed every addition to their poor materia medica in that time. #{R}auwolfia$ was used in {E}uropean medicine in the same way as in {I}ndia against intermittent fever, worms, snakebites and delirant conditions. {I}n the 19th century #{R}auwolfia$ disappeared from the pharmacopoeias. {T}he newly established "scientific medicine" started to clean its materia medica from "absurd" and "magical" elements. {V}ictim to these activities was the #{R}auwolfia$ as well. {I}ts usefulness was not recognised due to the pathophysiological ignorance about hypertonia and ventricular tachycardia, today the most important indications for #{R}auwolfia$-alcaloides. {O}nly as late as 1952, with the discovery of the alcaloid {R}eserpin, the #{R}auwolfia$ was rehabilitated as a highly effective drug.
