It was initially focused on main small pelagic species exploitation by large seiners in the open waters of Java sea and the transformation and commercialization of the catches. This paper will give a brief review of the main results obtained in various fields involved : environment, acoustic, bioecology, exploitation, sociology, economics and technology. It will discuss the need of multidisciplinary approach for such fisheries and the interest for research, development and management.
