@article{PAR00024073, title = {{I}nsight into the morphology and genetic diversity of the {C}haetoceros tenuissimus ({B}acillariophyta) species complex}, author = {{G}rzebyk, {D}. and {P}asqualini, {V}. and {G}arrido, {M}. and {Q}uilichini, {Y}. and {P}ereto, {C}. and {C}ecchi, {P}hilippe}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A}mong the marine planktonic diatoms, {C}haetoceros is among the most species-rich genera, and many {C}haetoceros species are considered important primary producers. {H}owever, little is known about the ecology and distribution of the few small solitary species within this genus, including {C}haetoceros tenuissimus. {T}his article describes a minute {C}haetoceros strain, identified as {C}. tenuissimus (named {CT}16{ED}) that was isolated at a coastal lagoon in {C}orsica {I}sland, {W}estern {M}editerranean. {T}he strain was characterized by light microscopy and scanning and transmission electron microscopy, with a specific focus on the fine structure and construction of setae and its behaviour in culture. {T}he {CT}16{ED} strain was compared with other strains we isolated from the species type locality ({O}stend {H}arbour, {N}orth {S}ea) by sequencing a fragment of the nuclear ribosomal {DNA} (r{DNA}) spanning from the 18{S} r{DNA} to the {D}3 region of the 28{S} r{DNA}, and the plastid rbc{L} gene that codes the large {R}u{B}is{CO} subunit. {B}ased on the literature and the available sequence data, the analysed strains were similar to {C}. tenuissimus but the phylogenetic analysis indicated a {C}. tenuissimus species complex that contained several clades, therefore the current taxonomic status of {C}. tenuissimus is discussed. {T}he comparison with the available r{DNA} and rbc{L} sequencing data of strains assigned to species considered as synonyms of {C}. tenuissimus, including {C}haetoceros simplex var. calcitrans, {C}haetoceros calcitrans and {C}haetoceros calcitrans f. pumilus, suggested that these taxa are paraphyletic within the genus {C}haetoceros.}, keywords = {{C}ell division ; {C}haetoceros tenuissimus ; internal transcribed spacer ({ITS}) ; morphology ; phylogeny ; r{DNA} ; ultrastructure}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}uropean {J}ournal of {P}hycology}, volume = {[{E}arly access]}, numero = {}, pages = {[19 ]}, ISSN = {0967-0262}, year = {2022}, DOI = {10.1080/09670262.2022.2029949}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00024073}, }
