This species, characterized by alternating large wide dark and vertical bands on the whole body and a scapular foramen, is considered as belonging to a new genus in the Eigenmanninae subfamily. As the other genus of this subfamily (Archolaemus, Distocyclus, Eigenmannia and Rhabdolichops) it has three radials, the third resulting from the fusion of radials 3 and 4; but it differs from the other in having 14-15 precaudal vertebrae versus 11-14, and a lower number of anal fin rays (132-164 versus 160-260).
