@article{PAR00009549, title = {{A}n initial assessment of {SMOS} derived soil moisture over the continental {U}nited {S}tates}, author = {{P}an, {M}. and {S}ahoo, {A}. {K}. and {W}ood, {E}. {F}. and {A}l {B}itar, {A}. and {L}eroux, {D}. and {K}err, {Y}ann}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he recently available {S}oil {M}oisture and {O}cean {S}alinity ({SMOS}) 1.4 {GH}z based soil moisture retrievals for the year of 2010 and the first nine months of 2011 are assessed over the continental {U}nited {S}tates ({CONUS}) region, along with soil moisture retrievals produced at {P}rinceton {U}niversity based on the {A}dvanced {M}icrowave {S}canning {R}adiometer ({AMSR}-{E}) 10.7 {GH}z channel using the {L}and {S}urface {M}icrowave {E}mission {M}odel ({LSMEM}) and in-situ measurements from the {N}atural {R}esource {C}onservation {S}ervice's ({NRCS}) {S}oil {C}limate {A}nalysis {N}etwork ({SCAN}). {T}he assessment is carried out using a performance metric developed by {C}row ({J}. {H}ydromet., 2007), which calculates the ability of soil moisture estimates to correct errors in surface moisture predictions through a linear {K}alman filter. {W}ithin the {C}row framework, {SMOS} retrievals show the same level of skill as {AMSR}-{E}/{LSMEM} or {SCAN} when evaluated on the days where both are available. {B}ut the {SMOS} product is significantly less available than {AMSR}-{E}/{LSMEM} or {SCAN}, especially on rainy days, therefore it is less able to reproduce the rainfall-moisture dynamics and consequently achieves a lower performance metric if all available data are used from all products. {D}etailed analysis shows that, with uncertainties, the performance of both {SMOS} and {AMSR}-{E}/{LSMEM} generally decays with thicker vegetation and wetter climate but is not significantly influenced by topography. {W}e expect {SMOS} to further improve its accuracy through validation studies and its availability under rainy conditions as well.}, keywords = {{L}-band ; passive microwave remote sensing ; soil moisture}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}eee {J}ournal of {S}elected {T}opics in {A}pplied {E}arth {O}bservations and {R}emote {S}ensing}, volume = {5}, numero = {5}, pages = {1448--1457}, ISSN = {1939-1404}, year = {2012}, DOI = {10.1109/jstars.2012.2194477}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00009549}, }
