@article{PAR00009445, title = {{O}rganic carbon dynamics in the {M}editerranean {S}ea : an integrated study}, author = {{S}antinelli, {C}. and {S}emp{\'e}r{\'e}, {R}ichard and {V}an {W}ambeke, {F}. and {C}harriere, {B}. and {S}eritti, {A}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}otal ({TOC}) and dissolved ({DOC}) organic carbon vertical profiles were analyzed from 11 stations located in various regions of the {M}editerranean {S}ea, together with the distribution of other physical, chemical and biological parameters. {TOC} showed the highest concentrations (68-83 mu {M}) above the pycnocline, followed by a marked decrease to values of 45-48 mu {M} at 100-200 m. {B}elow 200 m, values of 40-45 mu {M} were observed. {T}he excess {TOC} and {DOC} occurring at each station was calculated by subtracting 48 mu {M} from the observed concentrations. {T}he stock of the excess {TOC} and {DOC} increased eastward; while surface {DOC} mineralization rates decreased from 1.5 mu {M} d(-1) to 0.26 mu {M} d(-1) eastward. {T}he integrated average of the biological parameters in the above-pycnocline layer showed a bacterial production versus particulate primary production ({BP}/{PPP}) ratio ranging from 22% in the {I}onian {S}ea ({MIO} station) to 31% in the {L}igurian {S}ea ({D}yfamed station), while bacterial carbon demand versus {PPP} was higher than 100%, considering a bacterial growth efficiency of both 15% and 30%. {T}he data here reported indicate various scenarios of carbon dynamics. {A}t the stations west of the {S}ardinian {C}hannel, the microbial loop was very active, and a high flux of carbon to the microbial loop (large bacterial and protist abundance) may be hypothesized, which would result in a low {DOC} concentration. {A}t the stations east of the {S}ardinian {C}hannel, no significant longitudinal variation was found in {DOC} and {BP}. {DOC} accumulated at these stations, possibly due to bacteria {P}-limitation, to {DOC} chemical composition and/or to the occurrence of different prokaryotic populations with a different ability to consume the available {DOC}.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{G}lobal {B}iogeochemical {C}ycles}, volume = {26}, numero = {}, pages = {{GB}4004}, ISSN = {0886-6236}, year = {2012}, DOI = {10.1029/2011gb004151}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00009445}, }
