@article{PAR00008947, title = {{I}ntrageneric relationships within {G}erbilliscus ({R}odentia, {M}uridae, {G}erbillinae), with characterization of an additional {W}est {A}frican species}, author = {{G}ranjon, {L}aurent and {C}olangelo, {P}. and {T}atard, {C}. and {C}olyn, {M}. and {D}obigny, {G}authier and {N}icolas, {V}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he systematics of the {A}frican rodent genus {G}erbilliscus is still a matter of debate. {A}t the genus level it has been said to include the related genus {G}erbillurus, and at the species level some species still need to be definitely recognized as distinct. {T}o tackle these questions, we gathered and analyzed mitochondrial (cytochrome b) and nuclear ({BRCA}1) gene sequences in a number of specimens representing ten species of {G}erbilliscus and three species of {G}erbillurus. {P}hylogenetic reconstructions confirm that {G}erbillurus should be considered a synonym of {G}erbilliscus. {T}hey also clearly show that species diversity in this group is spatially organized, with geographically well-defined species groups covering major areas of sub-{S}aharan {A}frica, namely {S}outhern, {E}astern and {W}estern {A}frica. {I}n the latter area, a well-supported genetic lineage appears to correspond to a hitherto overlooked species, also characterized by a distinctive karyotype. {T}his species is characterized by an overall large size, a relatively long tail, a distinct karyotype, and represents a well-differentiated genetic cluster. {I}t ranges from {B}enin to {G}uinea in {S}udano-{G}uinean forest-savanna mosaic habitats, where it can be sympatric with the congeneric species {G}. kempi and {G}. guineae. {D}etailed body and skull morphological and biometrical analyses performed on samples of the {W}est {A}frican species, including type specimens described in this region, suggest that this species may correspond to {G}. kempi. {I}f confirmed, this would imply that what is currently named {G}. kempi would deserve another species name, the most likely of which would be {G}. giffardi.}, keywords = {{G}erbillurus ; {M}olecular phylogeny ; {M}orphometry ; {S}udano-{G}uinean zone ; {ZONE} {SOUDANOGUINEENNE} ; {AFRIQUE} {DE} {L}'{OUEST}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{Z}ootaxa}, numero = {3325}, pages = {1--25}, ISSN = {1175-5326}, year = {2012}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00008947}, }
