@article{PAR00008933, title = {{U}pdated checklist of the freshwater and estuarine fishes of {F}rench {G}uiana}, author = {{L}e {B}ail, {P}. {Y}. and {C}ovain, {R}. and {J}{\'e}gu, {M}ichel and {F}isch-{M}uller, {S}. and {V}igouroux, {R}. and {K}eith, {P}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he fish fauna of {F}rench {G}uiana is among the best known of {S}outh {A}merica. {V}arious fieldwork campaigns have been conducted since the publication of the "{A}tlas des poissons d'eau douce" de {G}uyane, particularly in poorly surveyed areas, leading to the discovery of new taxa, and numerous scientific publications have provided new insights concerning this fauna. {A}n updated checklist of the fishes of {F}rench {G}uiana, including all of this new information, is therefore desirable. {T}he list contains 416 species, 367 of which are strictly freshwater. {F}ish diversity is strongly correlated with catchment size and is, on average, higher in {F}rench {G}uiana than in {S}uriname. {T}he largest groups are the {C}haraciformes (41%), {S}iluriformes (33%) and {P}erciformes (13%). {T}he relative abundance of taxonomic groups differs between catchments, probably reflecting the ecological character of the rivers. {E}ighty seven species, around a quarter of the ichthyofauna, are listed as endemic, but this may be an underestimate because a rather strict definition of endemism is used. {T}he rate of endemism is strongly correlated with catchment size, with some families showing higher than average rates. {C}omparison of the number of species shared by the different catchments suggests a highly complex pattern of dispersal as a function of the catchment size, topography, and species. {T}he {O}yapock {R}iver seems to belong to a relatively distinct biogeographic zone influenced by the {A}mazon basin, but it is not possible to show a broader trend. {T}hese results provide an additional tool for environmental managers and decision makers.}, keywords = {{I}chthyofauna ; {G}uiana {S}hield ; {D}istribution ; {D}iversity ; {N}eotropics ; {C}onservation}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}ybium}, volume = {36}, numero = {1}, pages = {293--319}, ISSN = {0399-0974}, year = {2012}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00008933}, }
