@article{PAR00008283, title = {{H}elichrysum gymnocephalum essential oil : chemical composition and cytotoxic, antimalarial and antioxidant activities, attribution of the activity origin by correlations}, author = {{A}foulous, {S}. and {F}erhout, {H}. and {R}aoelison, {E}. {G}. and {V}alentin, {A}. and {M}oukarzel, {B}{\'e}atrice and {C}ouderc, {F}. and {B}ouajila, {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{H}elichrysum gymnocephalum essential oil ({EO}) was prepared by hydrodistillation of its leaves and characterized by {GC}-{MS} and quantified by {GC}-{FID}. {T}wenty three compounds were identified. 1,8-{C}ineole (47.4%), bicyclosesquiphellandrene (5.6%), gamma-curcumene (5.6%), alpha-amorphene (5.1%) and bicyclogermacrene (5%) were the main components. {O}ur results confirmed the important chemical variability of {H}. gymnocephalum. {T}he essential oil was tested in vitro for cytotoxic (on human breast cancer cells {MCF}-7), antimalarial ({P}lasmodium falciparum: {F}c{B}1-{C}olumbia strain, chloroquine-resistant) and antioxidant ({ABTS} and {DPPH} assays) activities. {H}. gymnocephalum {EO} was found to be active against {MCF}-7 cells, with an {IC}50 of 16 +/- 2 mg/{L}. {T}he essential oil was active against {P}. falciparum ({IC}50 = 25 +/- 1 mg/{L}). {H}owever, the essential oil exhibited a poor antioxidant activity in the {DPPH} ({IC}50 value > 1,000 mg/{L}) and {ABTS} ({IC}50 value = 1,487.67 +/- 47.70 mg/{L}) assays. {W}e have reviewed the existing results on the anticancer activity of essential oils on {MCF}-7 cell line and on their antiplasmodial activity against the {P}. falciparum. {T}he aim was to establish correlations between the identified compounds and their biological activities (antiplasmodial and anticancer). beta-{S}elinene ({R}-2 = 0.76), alpha-terpinolene ({R}-2 = 0.88) and aromadendrene ({R}-2 = 0.90) presented a higher relationship with the anti-cancer activity. {H}owever, only calamenene ({R}-2 = 0.70) showed a significant correlation for the antiplasmodial activity.}, keywords = {{H}elichrysum gymnocephalum ; {GC}-{MS} ; antimalarial activity ; cytotoxic ; activity ; antioxidant activity}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}olecules}, volume = {16}, numero = {10}, pages = {8273--8291}, ISSN = {1420-3049}, year = {2011}, DOI = {10.3390/molecules16108273}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00008283}, }
