@article{PAR00008207, title = {{S}tructure, paleogeographic inheritance, and deformation history of the southern {A}tlas foreland fold and thrust belt of {T}unisia}, author = {{S}aid, {A}. and {B}aby, {P}atrice and {C}hardon, {D}. and {O}uali, {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}tructural analysis of the southern {T}unisian {A}tlas was carried out using field observation, seismic interpretation, and cross section balancing. {I}t shows a mix of thick-skinned and thin-skinned tectonics with lateral variations in regional structural geometry and amounts of shortening controlled by {NW}-{SE} oblique ramps and tear faults. {I}t confirms the role of the {L}ate {T}riassic-{E}arly {J}urassic rifting inheritance in the structuring of the active foreland fold and thrust belt of the southern {T}unisian {A}tlas, in particular in the development of {NW}-{SE} oblique structures such as the {G}afsa fault. {T}he {L}ate {T}riassic-{E}arly {J}urassic structural pattern is characterized by a family of first-order {NW}-{SE} trending normal faults dipping to the east and by second-order {E}-{W} trending normal faults limiting a complex system of grabens and horsts. {T}hese faults have been inverted during two contractional tectonic events. {T}he first event occurred between the middle {T}uronian and the late {M}aastrichtian and can be correlated with the onset of the convergence between {A}frica and {E}urasia. {T}he second event corresponding to the principal shortening tectonic event in the southern {A}tlas started in the {S}erravalian-{T}ortonian and is still active. {D}uring the {N}eogene, the southern {A}tlas foreland fold and thrust belt propagated on the evaporitic decollement level infilling the {L}ate {T}riassic-{E}arly {J}urassic rift. {T}he major {E}ocene "{A}tlas event," described in hinterland domains and in eastern {T}unisia, did not deform significantly the southern {T}unisian {A}tlas, which corresponded in this period to a backbulge broad depozone.}, keywords = {{TUNISIE} ; {ATLAS} {SUD}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{T}ectonics}, volume = {30}, numero = {}, pages = {{TC}6004}, ISSN = {0278-7407}, year = {2011}, DOI = {10.1029/2011tc002862}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00008207}, }
