@article{PAR00007805, title = {{F}ire-vegetation interplay in a mosaic structure of {Q}uercus suber woodlands and {M}editerranean maquis under recurrent fires}, author = {{S}chafffiauser, {A}. and {C}urt, {T}. and {T}atoni, {T}hierry}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{W}e examined the effects of fire recurrence on a mosaic structure of {Q}uercus suber and {E}rica-{C}istus shrubland communities of {S}outheastern {F}rance in order to improve the understanding of fire-vegetation interplay. {P}lant communities that were similar in 1959 (woodlands on shrublands called maquis on acidic soils) were compared along a gradient of fire recurrence, from 0 to 4 fires, with different time intervals between fires. {T}he results showed that understory cover increased roughly with fire recurrence, whereas tree height, cover, density, stand basal area and litter depth decreased. {D}ifferent fire recurrences along the past decades led to different vegetation types. {H}igh fire recurrence corresponded to maquis and sparse cork-oak woodlands while pure oak woodlands established in the absence of fire during the same period. {I}n all, the diversity of tree diameter decreased with fire recurrence. {H}igh fire recurrence (3 or 4 fires in 50 years) led to a simple vertical structure of vegetation with a mono-layered shrub cover and few {Q}uercus suber trees. {I}n contrast, spatial connections between plants were maximal at longer time intervals, leading to a multi-layered vegetation. {W}e finally discuss the potential implications of past fires on the behavior of future fires in the perspective of a sustainable management of these {M}editerranean ecosystems.}, keywords = {{F}ire recurrence ; {S}tructural diversity ; {A}cidic soils ; {M}aquis ; {C}ork oak ; woodlands ({Q}uercus suber {L}.)}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{F}orest {E}cology and {M}anagement}, volume = {262}, numero = {5}, pages = {730--738}, ISSN = {0378-1127}, year = {2011}, DOI = {10.1016/j.foreco.2011.05.003}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00007805}, }
