@article{PAR00007520, title = {{E}volution in the deep sea : a combined analysis of the earliest diverging living chitons ({M}ollusca : {P}olyplacophora : {L}epidopleurida)}, author = {{S}igwart, {J}. {D}. and {S}chwabe, {E}. and {S}aito, {H}. and {S}amadi, {S}arah and {G}iribet, {G}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{L}epidopleurida is the earliest diverged group of living polyplacophoran molluscs. {T}hey are found predominantly in the deep sea, including sunken wood, cold seeps, other abyssal habitats, and a few species are found in shallow water. {T}he group is morphologically identified by anatomical features of their gills, sensory aesthetes, and gametes. {T}heir shell features closely resemble the oldest fossils that can be identified as modern polyplacophorans. {W}e present the first molecular phylogenetic study of this group, and also the first combined phylogenetic analysis for any chiton, including three gene regions and 69 morphological characters. {T}he results show that {L}epidopleurida is unambiguously monophyletic, and the nine genera fall into five distinct clades, which partly support the current view of polyplacophoran taxonomy. {T}he genus {H}anleyella {S}irenko, 1973 is included in the family {P}rotochitonidae, and {F}erreiraellidae constitutes another distinct clade. {T}he large cosmopolitan genus {L}eptochiton {G}ray, 1847 is not monophyletic; {L}eptochiton and {L}eptochitonidae sensu stricto are restricted to {N}orth {A}tlantic and {M}editerranean taxa. {L}eptochitonidae s. str. is sister to {P}rotochitonidae. {T}he results also suggest two separate clades independently inhabiting sunken wood substrates in the south-west {P}acific. {A}ntarctic and other chemosynthetic-dwelling species may be derived from wood-living species. {S}ubstantial taxonomic revision remains to be done to resolve lepidopleuran classification, but the phylogeny presented here is a dramatic step forward in clarifying the relationships within this interesting group.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}nvertebrate {S}ystematics}, volume = {24}, numero = {6}, pages = {560--572}, ISSN = {1445-5226}, year = {2010}, DOI = {10.1071/is10028}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00007520}, }
