@article{PAR00007486, title = {{I}nter- and intra-annual variations of {P}b/{C}a ratios in clam shells ({M}ercenaria mercenaria): a record of anthropogenic lead pollution ?}, author = {{G}illikin, {D}.{P}. and {D}ehairs, {F}. and {B}aeyens, {W}. and {N}avez, {J}. and {L}orrain, {A}nne and {A}ndr{\'e}, {L}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n this study, we re-assess the use of bivalve shells as a proxy of lead pollution. {P}revious studies have stressed that shells display little variability compared to soft tissues and thus are better for pollution biomonitoring. {H}owever, in this manuscript we illustrate that there is large inter- and intra-annual {P}b variability between shells of the clam {M}ercenaria mercenaria collected in {N}orth {C}arolina, {USA}. {T}herefore, year to year, as well as intra-annual variations in {P}b/{C}a ratios should be interpreted with caution. {D}espite this variability, we were able to obtain an annual {P}b chronology from 1949 to 2002 using 11 shells collected at different times which clearly exhibited the late 1970's peak in {P}b from leaded gasoline use. {T}his indicates that when enough specimens are pooled together, bivalve shells can be used to reconstruct large, long term changes in environmental {P}b concentrations. {O}ur data compare well with other studies of aragonite clams from sites with low regional lead pollution. {F}rom this we conclude that the {C}ape {L}ookout region of {N}orth {C}arolina has not received extensive pollution over the 1949-2002 period. {T}he {P}b concentration in shells growing in the 1949-1976 period was not significantly different from those growing in the 1982-2002 period, although other proxies suggest that the 1949-1976 period should be considerably higher. {T}herefore, our data suggest that there is still a modern source of {P}b in the coastal {N}orth {C}arolina environment.}, keywords = {{ETATS} {UNIS}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}arine {P}ollution {B}ulletin}, volume = {50}, numero = {12}, pages = {1530--1540}, year = {2005}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00007486}, }
