@article{PAR00006302, title = {{E}valuating resistance to {B}t toxin {C}ry1{A}b by {F}-2 screen in {E}uropean populations of {O}strinia nubilalis ({L}epidoptera : {C}rambidae)}, author = {{E}ngels, {H}. and {B}ourguet, {D}enis and {C}agan, {L}. and {M}anachini, {B}. and {S}chuphan, {I}. and {S}todola, {T}. {J}. and {M}icoud, {A}. and {B}razier, {C}. and {M}ottet, {C}. and {A}ndow, {D}. {A}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he large-scale cultivation of transgenic crops producing {B}acillus thuringiensis ({B}t) toxins have already lead to the evolution of {B}t resistance in some pest populations targeted by these crops. {W}e used the {F}-2 screening method for further estimating the frequency of resistance alleles of the {E}uropean corn borer, {O}strinia nubilalis ({H}ubner) ({L}epidoptera: {C}rambidae), to {B}t maize, {Z}ea mays {L}., producing the {C}ry1{A}b toxin. {I}n {F}rance, {G}ermany, and {I}taly, 784, 455, and 80 lines of {E}uropean corn borer were screened for resistance to {M}on810 maize, respectively. {I}n {S}lovakia, 26 lines were screened for resistance to the {C}ry1{A}b toxin. {T}he cost of {F}-2 screen performed in the four countries varied from {US}$300 to $1,300 per line screened. {T}he major difference in cost was mostly due to a severe loss of univoltine lines during the screen in {G}ermany and {S}lovakia. {I}n none of the screened lines did we detect alleles conferring resistance to {M}on810 maize or to the {C}ry1{A}b toxin. {T}he frequency of resistance alleles were <1.0 x 10(-3), <1.6 x 10(-3), <9.2 x 10(-3), and <2.6 x 10(-2) in {F}rance, {G}ermany, {I}taly, and {S}lovakia, with 95% probability, respectively. {T}he average detection probability over all lines was {M}aking the assumption that {E}uropean corn borer populations in these countries belong to the same genetic entity, the frequency of alleles conferring resistance to the {C}ry1{A}b produced by the {M}on810 maize in western and central {E}urope was 1.0 x 10(-4), with a 95% confidence interval of 0-3.0 x 10(-4).}, keywords = {{E}uropean corn borer ; {B}t maize ; {M}on810 ; resistance management ; {HDR} ; strategy}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {E}conomic {E}ntomology}, volume = {103}, numero = {5}, pages = {1803--1809}, ISSN = {0022-0493}, year = {2010}, DOI = {10.1603/ec10055}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00006302}, }
