@article{PAR00004439, title = {{M}ineralogical characteristics of soil dust from source regions in northern {C}hina}, author = {{S}hen, {Z}. {X}. and {C}aquineau, {S}andrine and {C}ao, {J}. {J}. and {Z}hang, {X}. {Y}. and {H}an, {Y}. {M}. and {G}audichet, {A}. and {G}omes, {L}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{M}ineral compositions of aerosol particles were investigated at four sites ({A}ksu, {D}unhuang, {Z}henbeitai, and {T}ongliao) in desert regions of northern {C}hina from {M}arch to {M}ay in 2001 and 2002 during the intensive field campaign period of {ACE}-{A}sia ({A}erosol {C}haracterization {E}xperiments-{A}sia). {T}he {X}-ray diffraction ({XRD}) results show the main minerals for {A}sian dust are illite, chlorite, kaolinite, quartz, feldspar, calcite, and dolomite. {G}ypsum, homblende, and halite are also detected in several samples. {S}emi-quantitative mineralogical data of aerosol samples show that carbonate content decreases from western to eastern source areas; that is, soil dust collected at western source area sites of {D}unhuang and {A}ksu are enriched with carbonate, while northeastern source area site of {T}ongliao is associated with low carbonate content. {B}ut the spatial distribution of feldspar exhibits a different pattern as compared to carbonate, increasing from the western to the eastern sources. {T}he total clay content is significantly higher (73% in average) at the deposition site of {C}hangwu than those at source areas. {A}ir-mass back trajectory studies for the three dust storm events observed at {C}hangwu, showed that soil dust transport pathways were as expected from carbonate content for the source identification, further demonstrating that carbonate was a useful tracer for eolian dust on regional scale in northern {C}hina.}, keywords = {{S}oil dust ; {M}ineralogical composition ; {C}arbonate ; {T}racer}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}articuology}, volume = {7}, numero = {6}, pages = {507--512}, ISSN = {1674-2001}, year = {2009}, DOI = {10.1016/j.partic.2009.10.001}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00004439}, }
