@article{PAR00003599, title = {{M}odern and pleistocene reservoir ages inferred from south pacific corals}, author = {{B}urr, {G}. {S}. and {B}eck, {J}. {W}. and {C}orr{\`e}ge, {T}hierry and {C}abioch, {G}uy and {T}aylor, {F}. {W}. and {D}onahue, {D}. {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}his paper presents radiocarbon results from modern {S}outh {P}acific corals from the {M}arquesas {I}slands, {V}anuatu. {P}apua {N}ew {G}uinea ({PNG}), and {E}aster {I}sland. {A}ll of the measurements are from pre-bomb {P}orites corals that lived during the 1940s and 1950s. {T}he data reflect subannual to multiannual surface ocean {C}-14 variability and allow for precise. unambiguous reservoir age determinations. {T}he results are compared with published values from other coral records throughout the {S}outh {P}acific, with striking consistency. {B}y comparisons with other published values, we identify 3 {S}outh {P}acific regions with uniform pre-bomb reservoir ages (1945 to 1955). {T}hese are {I}) the {C}entral {E}quatorial {S}outh {P}acific (361.6 +/- 8.2 {C}-14 yr. 2 sigma); 2) the {W}estern {E}quatorial {S}outh {P}acific (322.1 +/- 8.6 {C}-14 yr, 2 sigma): and 3) the subtropical {P}acific (266.8 +/- 13.8 {C}-14 yr, 2 sigma). {T}he question of how much, and how fast, {S}outh {P}acific reservoir ages might have varied in the past is addressed by examining a published record from a {P}leistocene coral from {V}anuatu that lived over a 700-yr period during the {Y}ounger {D}ryas. {T}he average reservoir age at that time was larger than today, by similar to 150 yr, and exhibited reservoir age variability on a decadal timescale not seen in modern times. {M}easured paleo-reservoir ages increase sharply in this record by as many as 300 {C}-14 yr in 3 decades. {T}hese increases are punctuated by smaller reservoir age decreases, on the order of 150 yr. {T}his reservoir age variability provides a rare picture of active ocean ventilation and ocean-atmosphere exchange at the close of the {P}leistocene.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{R}adiocarbon}, volume = {51}, numero = {1}, pages = {319--335}, ISSN = {0033-8222}, year = {2009}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00003599}, }
