@article{PAR00003582, title = {{M}orbidity in {HIV}-1-infected children treated or not treated with highly active antiretroviral therapy ({HAART}), {A}bidjan, {C}{\^o}te d'{I}voire, 2000-04 - [{C}orrection]}, author = {{W}alenda, {C}. and {K}ouakoussui, {A}. and {R}ouet, {F}. and {W}emin, {L}. and {A}naky, {M}. {F}. and {M}sellati, {P}hilippe}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: {I}n the 2008 {UNAIDS} epidemic update, 33 million people worldwide were estimated infected with {HIV}, including 2.2 million children. {I}n {C}te d{I}voire, 480 000 adults and 60 000 children were {HIV}-infected. {S}tudies in developed countries have shown an improvement of childrens morbidity under {HAART} treatment. {O}bjective: {T}he objective of this study is to describe and compare morbidity in relation to evolution of the disease in {HIV}-1-infected children in {C}te d{I}voire, according to symptoms and the presence or absence of {HAART} treatment. {M}ethodology: {A} total of 273 {HIV}-1-infected children from age 18 months to 18 years were included from {O}ctober 2000 until {D}ecember 2003. {F}ollow-up was continued until 30 {S}eptember 2004. {T}he study population was divided in three groups. {G}roup 1 included symptomatic children treated under {HAART}. {G}roup 2 included asymptomatic children who did not need {HAART} treatment. {G}roup 3 included children who met criteria to be treated at inclusion but were not treated. {P}rincipal {F}indings: {T}he three most common diseases in {G}roup 1 before treatment were bronchitis, diarrhoea and ear nose and throat ({ENT}) diseases. {U}nder treatment, the three most common diseases in {G}roup 1 were bronchitis, {ENT} diseases and diarrhoea. {T}he three most occurring diseases in {G}roup 2 were bronchitis, {ENT} diseases and skin infectious diseases. {T}he three most occurring diseases in {G}roup 3 were bronchitis, diarrhoea and {ENT} diseases. {C}onclusions: {T}he incidence of diseases was significantly lower among asymptomatic children than among symptomatic untreated children (p 0.0001). {T}he morbidity found in symptomatic children who received treatment was similar to that encountered in asymptomatic children. {T}he main reason for death in all of the groups was tuberculosis.}, keywords = {{COTE} {D}'{IVOIRE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {T}ropical {P}ediatrics}, volume = {55}, numero = {3}, pages = {170--176 [+ {C}orrection, vol.55, no 3, 1 , 2009]}, ISSN = {0142-6338}, year = {2009}, DOI = {10.1093/tropej/fmn106}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00003582}, }
