@article{PAR00003052, title = {{D}emography and life history of two rattan species, {E}remospatha macrocarpa and {L}accosperma secundiflorum, in {C}ote d'{I}voire}, author = {{K}ouassi, {K}ouadio and {B}arot, {S}{\'e}bastien and {G}ignoux, {J}. and {B}i, {I}. {A}. {Z}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}wo rattans species were studied in {C}ote d'{I}voire using a stage-classified matrix model to compare their demography and life histories. {R}espectively 854 and 1009 genets of {E}remospatha macrocarpa (pleonanthic) and {L}accosperma secundiflorum (hapaxanthic) were censused every 6 mo over 18 mo. {T}he population growth rates of {E}. macrocarpa (lambda = 0.979) and {L}. secundiflorum (lambda = 0.959) were not significantly different from 1. {T}his indicates that the populations were close to equilibrium. {H}owever. the difference between the stable stage distributions and the observed distributions indicated temporal variation in vital rates. {E}lasticity analysis showed that growth and fecundity had lower contributions to lambda than the survival rates for the two species. {A} {L}ife {T}able {R}esponse {E}xperiment revealed that the survival of the first juvenile stage (all stems < 6 m in length), fecundity, growth of the second juvenile stage (at least one stem > 6 m in length) and adult (reproductive) survival highly contribute: to the differences between the demography of the two species. {R}eproduction is postponed longer for {L}. secundiflorum than for {E}. macrocarpa and the mean remaining life span for adult genets is shorter for {L}. secundiflorum than for {E}. macrocarpa. {F}inally, our results suggest the existence of two trade-offs within reproduction which suggest that, although the two species have different demographic features, the lambda of their populations are not significantly different from 1.}, keywords = {{A}ge estimation ; {E}lasticity ; {L}ife-table response experiments ; {N}on-timber forest products ; {P}alm ; {P}opulation growth rate ; {S}tage-classified matrix model ; {T}ropical forest}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {T}ropical {E}cology}, volume = {24}, numero = {{P}art 5}, pages = {493--503}, ISSN = {0266-4674}, year = {2008}, DOI = {10.1017/s0266467408005312}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00003052}, }
