@article{PAR00002842, title = {{I}nflation of {A}ira {C}aldera ({J}apan) detected over {K}okubu urban area using {SAR} interferometry {ERS} data}, author = {{R}{\'e}my, {D}ominique and {B}onvalot, {S}ylvain and {M}urakami, {M}. and {B}riole, {P}. and {O}kuyama, {S}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{N}ine {ERS}-1 and {ERS}-2 descending orbit data acquired over the {A}ira {C}aldera between {J}une 1995 and {N}ovember 1998 were used to create 31 differential interferograms. {A}lthough the interferograms exhibit a relatively low level of coherence, even for couples sampling short time intervals (6 months), {D}ifferential {I}nterferometric {S}ynthetic {A}perture {R}adar ({D}in{SAR}) reveals a pattern of range change signal during the observation period in the urban area of {K}okubu city. {T}he analysis of the ground deformation time series relative to the earliest {ERS} images evidenced a maximum uplift of 23 mm between the north and the south of the city during the studied period. {T}aking the reduced surface of the coherent area into account, we performed a simple modelling of the deformation field assuming a spherical inflating source within an elastic half-space medium. {T}his simple model predicts a source located beneath the centre of {A}ira {C}aldera with a maximum volume increase of 30 106 m3 between 1995 and 1997, which would produced an inflation of about 7 cm of the centre of {A}ira {C}aldera and 4 cm of the south of {K}okubu city. {T}hese results are in good agreement with other geophysical observations carried out on {A}ira caldera during this unrest period. {D}espite the limited spatial extent of the coherent areas around {A}ira {C}aldera, this study shows that {D}in{SAR} method using {ERS} data can be successfully used to detect subtle ground displacement changes of the volcanic complex and thus provides complementary information to ground-based geodetic monitoring of dynamic processes at {A}ira {C}aldera and {S}akurajima volcano.}, keywords = {{JAPON}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {e{E}arth {D}iscussions}, volume = {1}, numero = {2}, pages = {151--165}, year = {2006}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00002842}, }
