@article{PAR00002082, title = {{S}patial genetic structure in the {L}aperrine's olive ({O}lea europaea subsp laperrinei), a long-living tree from the central {S}aharan mountains}, author = {{B}esnard, {G}. and {C}hristin, {P}. {A}. and {B}aali {C}herif, {D}. and {B}ouguedoura, {N}. and {A}nthelme, {F}abien}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {L}aperrine's olive ({O}lea europaea subsp. laperrinei) is an emblematic species of the {S}ahelo- {S}aharan {M}ountains. {P}opulations of this tree are locally threatened by extinction due to climatic vicissitudes and human activities, particularly in {N}iger and {A}lgeria. {I}n order to study the spatial genetic structure and the dynamics of {O}. e. laperrinei populations, we sampled trees in four isolated mountain ranges ({T}assili n'{A}jjer and {H}oggar ({A}lgeria), {T}amgak and {B}agzane ({N}iger)). {A} total of 237 genets were identified using nuclear microsatellites. {P}hylogenetic reconstruction based on plastid {DNA} data supported a maternal origin of {O}. e. laperrinei populations in {S}outh {A}lgeria, where a higher allelic richness was observed. {B}ased on nuclear microsatellite data, two levels of structure were revealed: first, individuals from {N}iger and {A}lgeria were separated in two distinct groups; second, four less differentiated clusters corresponded to the four studied mountain ranges. {T}hese results give support to the fact that desert barriers have greatly limited long distance gene flow. {W}ithin populations, pairwise kinship coefficients were significantly correlated to geographical distance for {N}iger populations but not for {A}lgerian mountains. {H}istorical factors and habitat heterogeneity may explain the differences observed. {W}e conclude that the {H}oggar acts as an important genetic reservoir that has to be taken into account in future conservation programmes. {M}oreover, very isolated endangered populations (for example, {B}agzane) displaying evident genetic particularities have to be urgently considered for their endemism.}, keywords = {conservation genetics ; microsatellites ; olive tree ; plastid {DNA} ; spatial autocorrelation ; threatened species ; {ALGERIE} ; {SAHARA} ; {NIGER} ; {TASSILI} {MASSIF} ; {HOGGAR} {MASSIF} ; {TAMGAK} {MASSIF} ; {BAGZANE} {MASSIF}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{H}eredity}, volume = {99}, numero = {6}, pages = {649--657}, ISSN = {0018-067{X}}, year = {2007}, DOI = {10.1038/sj.hdy.6801051}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00002082}, }
