@article{PAR00001090, title = {{E}ffects of salinity on strontium : calcium ratios in the otoliths of the {W}est {A}frican black-chinned tilapia {S}arotherodon melanotheron in a hypersaline estuary}, author = {{D}iouf, {K}hady and {P}anfili, {J}acques and {L}abonne, {M}aylis and {A}liaume, {C}. and {T}omas, {J}. and {C}hi, {T}. {D}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he biology and the behaviour of fish populations in hypersaline environments are poorly known. {T}he habitat occupation strategy of the tilapia {S}arotherodon melanotheron has been studied along a salinity gradient in the {S}aloum hypersaline estuary in {S}enegal ( salinity between 32 and 100). {T}he individual migratory behaviour has been analysed from otolith strontium-to-calcium concentration ratios from fish sampled in five locations during the 2003 wet season and the 2004 dry season. {I}n the upper part of the estuary ( salinities > 50), the {S}r: {C}a ratio in the otolith showed high variations, from 2.51 to 33.30 x 10(-3). {T}hese maximum observed values have never been reported in the literature. {T}he individual mean of {S}r: {C}a ratios increased according to the salinity gradient in the estuary, with significantly higher values in the upper part ( {S}r: {C}a mean = 16 x 10(-3)) than in the lower part ( salinity < 50, {S}r: {C}a mean = 12 x 10(-3)). {N}o significant difference in the {S}r: {C}a mean was observed between locations with comparable salinities. {S}r concentration in the water at the different locations was positively correlated with ambient salinity. {T}he mean of {S}r: {C}a in the otoliths was then in relationship with the level of {S}r in the water. {T}hus, the {S}r: {C}a ratios in the otolith of {S}. melanotheron allowed to discriminate the populations of this species and to hypothesize that they did not undertake large scale movements within the estuary.}, keywords = {{C}ichlidae ; life history ; behaviour ; otolith microchemistry ; {SENEGAL} ; {SINE} {SALOUM}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}nvironmental {B}iology of {F}ishes}, volume = {77}, numero = {1}, pages = {9--20}, ISSN = {0378-1909}, year = {2006}, DOI = {10.1007/s10641-006-9048-x}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00001090}, }
