@article{PAR00000998, title = {{P}aleomagnetism and tectonics of the southern {A}tacama {D}esert (25-28 degrees {S}), northern {C}hile}, author = {{A}rriagada, {C}. and {R}operch, {P}ierrick and {M}podozis, {C}. and {F}ernandez, {R}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{W}e report paleomagnetic results for 131 sites from the modern forearc of northern {C}hile (25 degrees {S} and 28 degrees {S}). {R}emanent magnetization in volcanic and intrusive rocks is mostly primary, while a secondary magnetization is observed in sedimentary rocks. {C}omparison of locality-mean directions with expected paleomagnetic directions indicates vertical axis rotations from -7.3 degrees +/- 21.6 degrees counterclockwise to 52.7 degrees +/- 17 degrees clockwise. {J}urassic to {E}arly {C}retaceous rocks from the {C}oastal {C}ordillera and {C}retaceous to {P}aleocene rocks from the {C}entral {D}epression show similar magnitude (> 30 degrees) clockwise rotations, while more variable rotations occur in {M}esozoic to {E}ocene rocks of the {P}recordillera. {C}lockwise rotations in {M}esozoic and {P}aleogene rocks occur in the {C}hilean {F}rontal {C}ordillera south of 27 degrees 30'{S}. {P}aleomagnetic results in three large {M}iocene ignimbrite sheets overlying rotated and nonrotated older rocks in the {P}recordillera and {P}re-{A}ndean {D}epression which show no relative rotation between sites indicate that most rotations within the study area occurred prior to 18 {M}a (early {M}iocene) and likely during and after the "{I}ncaic' tectonic event, which affected large tracts of the central {A}ndes. {T}he postulated onset of rotations in the north {C}hilean forearc was contemporaneous with the beginning of horizontal shortening and uplift of the {E}astern {C}ordillera in {B}olivia and northwestern {A}rgentina. {R}otation of the {C}hilean forearc, enhancement of the curvature of the central {A}ndes, and the formation of the {B}olivian {O}rocline seem to be, for the most part, closely linked to the evolution of the {E}ocene-{O}ligocene tectonics of the {E}astern {C}ordillera.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{T}ectonics}, volume = {25}, numero = {4}, pages = {art. no. {TC}4001 -- {NIL}_41--{NIL}_66}, ISSN = {0278-7407}, year = {2006}, DOI = {10.1029/2005{TC}001923}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00000998}, }
