@article{PAR00000475, title = {{G}eographic distribution and breeding site preference of {A}edes albopictus and {A}edes aegypti ({D}iptera : {C}ulicidae) in {C}ameroon, {C}entral {A}frica}, author = {{S}imard, {F}. and {N}choutpouen, {E}. and {T}oto, {J}. {C}. and {F}ontenille, {D}idier}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{P}resence in {C}ameroon of the recently introduced {A}edes ({S}tegomyia) albopictus ({S}kuse) in association with the indigenous {A}edes aegypti ({L}.) raises public heath concerns because it might alter the risk of arbovirus transmission. {T}he breeding site and distribution of the two {S}tegomyia species are updated and reported following entomological surveys carried out in 22 localities throughout {C}ameroon, with a total of 1,353 containers with water visited. {A}e. aegypti was found in every location sampled, showing higher infestation rates in northern {C}ameroon. {B}reeding populations of {A}e. albopictus were observed in all 19 southern localities, up to the {A}damaoua mountains, but the species was not recorded further north. {I}n the area where both species are present, they were often sampled in the same larval developmental sites, suggesting convergent habitat segregation. {T}he most frequently encountered artificial and natural breeding sites were used tires, discarded tins and plastic containers, abandoned car parts, brick holes, dead leaves on the ground, tree holes, and rock pools. {F}urther monitoring of the demographic as well as geographic expansion of {A}e. albopictus in this {A}frotropical environment and its relationships with indigenous {A}e. aegypti should provide insight into the biology of this highly invasive species and help to implement arboviruses surveillance programs in the area.}, keywords = {{A}edes aegypti ; {A}edes albopictus ; larval ecology ; {C}ameroon ; {A}frica ; {CAMEROUN} ; {ADAMAOUA}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {M}edical {E}ntomology}, volume = {42}, numero = {5}, pages = {726--731}, ISSN = {0022-2585}, year = {2005}, DOI = {10.1093/jmedent/42.5.7262}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00000475}, }
