@article{PAR00000356, title = {{A}ssessment of laboratory and field assays of sunlight-induced killing of mosquito larvae by photosensitizers}, author = {{D}ondji, {B}. and {D}uchon, {S}. and {D}iabate, {A}. and {H}erve, {J}. {P}. and {C}orbel, {V}. and {H}ougard, {J}. {M}. and {S}antus, {R}. and {S}chrevel, {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he effectiveness of light-induced killing of mosquito larvae in the presence of photosensitizers was studied with larvae of {A}edes aegypti ({L}.), {A}nopheles stephensi ({L}iston), and {C}ulex quinquefasciatus {S}ay grown in the laboratory and of {C}x. quinquefasciatus grown under field conditions. {T}ested photosensitizers included xanthene, chlorin, and porphyrin derivatives. {A}ll the larvae were treated at the fourth instar. {P}reliminary laboratory experiments showed a light-induced lethal effect of {R}ose {B}engal ({RB}) on three species of mosquito larvae. {C}ompared with other photo sensitizers, {RB} seemed to be more efficient at even lower concentration than chlorin (e6) and chlorophyllin on {A}e. aegypti larvae. {A}mong the four porphyrin derivatives, i.e., chloroquinoline tetraphenyl propioamidoporphine, tetraphenyl porphine tetrasulfonate, hematoporphyrin ({HP}), and tetraphenylporphinepropionic acid porphine, {HP} was the only effective photosensitizer on {A}e. aegypti larvae. {T}he best conditions for field tests using {RB} were conducted on {C}x. quinquefasciatus in {B}obo-{D}ioulasso, {B}urkina {F}aso. {T}he mortality induced by {RB} varied from 80 to 96% obtained with unfiltered cesspit water to 0.4 to 6.7% in cesspits with a heavy load of organic materials, thus providing the basis for further developments of this technique under field conditions.}, keywords = {photosensitizer ; larva control ; mosquito vectors ; rose bengal ; hematoporphyrin}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {M}edical {E}ntomology}, volume = {42}, numero = {4}, pages = {652--656}, ISSN = {0022-2585}, year = {2005}, DOI = {(incertain) 10.1043/0022-2585(2005)042[0652:{AOLAFA}]2.0.{CO};2}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00000356}, }
