  abstract = {{S}ince the trawl ban in 1980 pelagic species are the main resources exploited in the {J}ava {S}ea by numerous fisheries. {A}mong those the purse-seine fisheries are the main ones. {T}he large and medium seiners located in the province of {C}entral {J}ava are heavily involved in this exploitation. {T}he fleets consisting of wooden vessels prospect the {J}ava {S}ea, the {M}akassar {S}trait and the {S}outhern part of the {S}outh {C}hina {S}ea. {P}ekalongan and {J}uwana are the main centers where 70% of the vessels gather and 90% of the catch is landed. {I}f the activity in {P}ekalongan is high since 1976 it is new in {J}uwana and related to the displacement of the main fishing grounds to the eastern part of the {J}ava {S}ea.
