  abstract = {{T}he ecology of the freshwater prawn #{M}acrobrachium amazonicum$ has been studied in the {L}ower {T}ocantins river in 1985-86 from {C}ameta to the {T}ucurui hydroelectric dam and in the reservoir. {T}he population of the river below the dam exhibited a mean total length of 60 mm and a maximum of 132 mm. {T}he mean lengths displayed a seasonal oscillation correlated with adults migration and reproduction from {M}arch to {J}uly and recruitment from {S}eptember to {F}ebruary. {T}he global female prawns were parasited by the isopod #{P}robopyrus$ in the lower part of the river. {T}he population of #{M}. amazonicum$ that colonized the reservoir showed different biological characteristics from that below the dam : smaller mean and maximum lengths, earlier sexual maturity, strongly female-biaised sex-ratio, reproduction in {S}eptember and recruitment from {J}anuary to {M}arch. {N}o #{P}. bithynis$ isopod was collected in this area.
