  abstract = {{S}uccessful reciprocal hybridizations between #{C}larias gariepinus$ and #{H}eterobranchus longifilis$ were performed during three experiments. {T}he reciprocal hybrids were viable, their survival rates being similar to those found in the maternal species. {H}ybrid morphology was intermediate to that of the parents. {N}o difference in external morphology was found between the reciprocal hybrids. {G}rowth rate comparison under the same conditions and over a period of 307 days, revealed a considerably faster growth for #{H}. longifilis$ x male #{C}. gariepinus$ hybrids displayed an even faster growth than #{H}. longifilis$.
