There is presently no routine collection system for fishery statistics in Martinique, owing to many obstacles among which the number and dispersion of landing sites, the absence of any marketing structure, etc.. The implementation, in 1987, of a fishery research programm provided a new impetus to thinking on this problem, through the analysis of failures in development plans, the participation of a professional organization in the program, and the availability of methodological experience. This led to a project consisting of an inexpensive routine system based on the cooperation of several institutions which already collect fisheries data (government department, customs ...) or which could undertake some data collecting.
