%X Tropical small-scale fisheries are often multispecies, multigear fisheries, for which basic data, necessary in the classical approach, are not available. Possible research developments in this field are discussed. (i) Systematic collection and progressive improvement of basic data used in the classical models : this leads to considerable practical problems. (ii) Improvement of classical models : this is necessary from a scientific point of view but requires more data and complicates problem (i). (iii) Application of classical models with available (inadequate) data. This is only possible approach for stock assessment, but it proceeds more from an empirical method than from a scientific one. (iv) To develop new model, i.e. new hypotheses about the functioning of the resource fishery system (long-term management for optimal harvesting isnot necessarily the only "good question"). Further developments will depend upon the ability to produce new, multidisciplinary hypotheses, rather than transposing the old paradigms. (Résumé d'auteur)
