  abstract = {{T}ropical small-scale fisheries are often multispecies, multigear fisheries, for which basic data, necessary in the classical approach, are not available. {P}ossible research developments in this field are discussed. (i) {S}ystematic collection and progressive improvement of basic data used in the classical models : this leads to considerable practical problems. (ii) {I}mprovement of classical models : this is necessary from a scientific point of view but requires more data and complicates problem (i). (iii) {A}pplication of classical models with available (inadequate) data. {T}his is only possible approach for stock assessment, but it proceeds more from an empirical method than from a scientific one. (iv) {T}o develop new model, i.e. new hypotheses about the functioning of the resource fishery system (long-term management for optimal harvesting isnot necessarily the only "good question"). {F}urther developments will depend upon the ability to produce new, multidisciplinary hypotheses, rather than transposing the old paradigms.
