  abstract = {{F}ish production in the {C}entral {D}elta of the {N}iger ({M}ali) is known to result from the relationships between fishing methods and group of fishermen. {I}n the past a mystical ancestral system set out the defined fishing methods and controlled the communal management of fish movements, by reference to the water spirits and ancestors. {N}owadays, there are conflicts over management of the fishing grounds (access, controls), which is controlled by relationships between various groups of fishermen and national government authorities. {I}nterpretations based on tradition and on national law intermingle, defining new "rights". {B}ut ethical values are not lacking. {T}his "fisheries situation" leads to new interpretations of fishing and social dimensions, linked to systems of authority. {T}he situation is, in a fashion obviously very different from the traditional system, one of the main production factors.
