The authors make a brief presentation of the main problems arising when trying to use aquatic ecosystems both for fishing and aquaculture. Two examples concerning brackish waters along the Côte d'Ivoire and Benin shoreline are used. Three levels of competition are identified : space, resources and market. This analysis leads to questions about the place that aquaculture techniques could occupy within social fishing systems; that is to say : who is likely to develop such technology, and under what conditions ?
