  abstract = {{T}he state authorities having realized the importance of small-scale fisheries in {S}enegalese economy, instituted several development projects. {T}he most important are the motorization of fishing canoes and the introduction of purse seine gear in the small-scale fishery. {T}hese two projects benefit enormously from financial support programs through subsidies, credits and tax incentives. {T}he financial aid to fisheries has contributed to the profitability of the {S}enegalese small-scale fishery but has also generated adverse effects in the industry with long term implications. {T}hese effects are identified and analyzed to compare the results obtained with the intended objectives.
