  abstract = {{B}ecause of the special properties of renewable resources, a match between individual and social optima is exceptional. {T}his results in difficulties in applying a global and uniform approach to subsidies offered to small-scale fisheries. {A} classification has been drawn up, based on the analysis of subsidies to small-scale fisheries in seventeen developed countries, depending on the objectives of the subsidies. {T}he effects of subsidies on the main relevant variables in the fisheries sector are evaluated. {S}tock levels, values of landings, debt repayment, individual profits, costs of production, productivity surplus and its distribution and the development of international trade are taken into amount.
