In order to reduce the cost of searching for fish, a cooperative research program between the Centro de Estudios Espaciales (CEE), Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso (UCV), and the albacore and swordfish artisanal fishermen of Valparaiso was developed in 1986. The program aims to introduce the use of SST images obtained by means of SST data supplied by the NOAA satellite. Phase one of this research looked into the use of the satellite images and the relationships between environmental factors and the distribution of these fishes. The second phase, started in 1988, involved the participation of several fishermen along with extension activities such as editing an information bulletin, and training courses. The work has been characterized by a fast technology transfer and the development of a strong relationship between research and extension workers, and the artisanal fishermen.
